How I met the Heymoonshaker
When the Human Beatbox comes into contact with musical worlds other than those to which it has always been mainly combined (the "fifth element" of hip hop of which it is an integral part is defined, here can be created innovative, unique and surprising sounds .
I must admit that rap and hip hop are genres that I frequent and I have frequented little, I have always sought and appreciated the beatbox where you least expect it and on this front I think there is space to discover and create unheard of sound environments .
In 2011, a video appeared on YouTube that became viral all over the world and that currently has more than 56 million views: we are in a London road and a shaved boy, with a green sweatshirt, he creates with the beatbox rhythms dubstep , imitated with The voice the sound of Didjeridoo and adds, on the end, the use of the harmonica ; Everything is enriched by a fluid gestures that makes performance even more incisive.
As the minutes pass there are more and more people around him, intrigued, attracted and amazed, incredulous that something like this can happen.
Also in Italy this video spread virally , the Beatbox was not as known as it is now and I still remember the enthusiastic comments of the people who, like me, had seen the video.
Who is Dave Crowe?
The protagonist of the video is called Dave Crowe and at that time he became one of the Beatboxers in circulation, even described as the best beatboxer in the world. Those who did not agree on this statement that the international Beatbox scene knew it and frequented more deeply, the fact is that the video in question became popular like no other video before and consequently also the protagonist.
What, in my opinion, makes Dave Crowe is to have intuited the great potential of this discipline, bringing it to the street and above all making it dialogue with other sounds still unexplored up to that moment.
In 2008, in New Zealand, he met the bluesman and street artist Andy Balcon , together they decided to create the duo "Heymoonshaker" , and with it an original and unique sound, starting to perform on the street, continuing to be buskers .
The Heymoonshaker merge a direct and raw blues with the energy of the Beatbox and after a few years they travel the world coming to play in many clubs and festivals of the various continents.
They were also on tour in Italy, in some of these occasions I have known and seen them live and it is precisely in the lives that reach maximum surrender with an energy , a compactness and a "grip" on the public very high.
Heymoonshaker and Beatbox Blues
By creating a new genre, the "Beatbox Blues" are one of the first examples, and among the most successful, of a less conventional use of the Beatbox within the music scene.
After the release of the latest album "Noir" of 2017, and the relative tour ended in 2018, currently the Heymoonshaker project is on Stand by: the two musicians are dedicating themselves to new projects.
In particular, I would like to point out one of Dave Crowe's new projects, the " Stranger Faces" . It is again a duo: a beatboxer and a bassist, 2 loopstation and funky atmospheres or rather, as they call it, "funky lo-fi" !
